Snowflake Leads Initiative to Standardize AI Semantic Metadata
AI data cloud company Snowflake announced that it is spearheading the formation of the Open Semantic Interchange (OSI) multi-stakeholder initiative, joining forces with Mistral AI, BlackRock, Dbt Labs, Salesforce, Sigma, and RelationalAI to develop a vendor-neutral, open-source standard for sharing semantic metadata. The initiative aims to address analytical challenges in AI and business intelligence tools caused by inconsistent enterprise data definitions, and to enhance cross-platform interoperability.

At a Glance
- AI data cloud vendor Snowflake is spearheading the Open Semantic Interchange (OSI), a multi-stakeholder initiative aimed at building a vendor-neutral, open-source framework to standardize how semantic metadata—information that adds valuable context to data—is shared across different tools and platforms.
- Mistral AI, BlackRock, Dbt Labs, Salesforce, Sigma, and RelationalAI have also joined the initiative, according to anannouncementreleased Tuesday. OSI's goal is to create a common framework that helps enterprises unify conflicting data definitions—conflicts that make it difficult for humans and AI tools to analyze data from different AI and business intelligence applications.
- "This initiative reflects the industry coming together rather than competing to solve common challenges, building a more connected and open technology ecosystem for everyone," said Christian Kleinerman, executive vice president of products at Snowflake, in a statement accompanying the announcement.
Deep Dive
The initiative is the latest example of cross-sector collaboration in the tech industry, as companies work to establish common standards for AI and data to enhance the commercial value of technology.
Earlier this year,Microsoft joined more than 50 technology partnersin supporting Google's Agent2Agent AI agent interoperability protocol. In another example, the Fintech Open Source Foundation launched an initiativeto develop vendor-neutral AI service standards alongside banking giants like Citi and Morgan Stanley, as well as hyperscalers such as Microsoft, AWS, and Google Cloud.
Snowflake's collaborative standardization effort addresses a long-standing problem for CIOs, CTOs, and chief data and analytics officers, Yogesh Bhatt, senior director analyst at Gartner, told CIO Dive.
"Metadata is key to a rich semantic layer," Bhatt said. "However, because metadata has long been stored in proprietary ways and thus tied to specific vendors, its value to enterprises has been lost."
Bhatt said enterprises have tried different frameworks like data mesh to reclaim metadata value, but interoperability challenges remain in integrating metadata into semantic layers to drive AI and analytics capabilities.
OSI's overarching goal is toimprove interoperabilityby creating a common semantic data framework, thereby accelerating AI adoption. According to Snowflake's announcement, without a common semantic data framework, AI teams could spend weeks reconciling inconsistent definitions across platforms.
Snowflake said that by establishing shared semantic specifications, all tools will be able to "speak the same language," making it easier for enterprises to adopt different technologies and derive greater value from AI tools.
Although metadata standardization will take time to evolve and mature, Bhatt sees it as an important step toward creating value for AI and analytics.
"OSI is a strong attempt to drive transparency and standardization in how metadata is exchanged, defined, and stored in enterprise environments," he said.
