AWS Launches Agent Registry to Address Uncontrolled Expansion of Enterprise AI Agents
AWS announced on Thursday the preview release of Agent Registry, a centralized platform for hosting, building, and governing AI agents across frameworks and designs. AWS, as the dominant enterprise cloud provider, is positioning its Agent Registry as a control layer to address three persistent issues in agentic AI work: lack of visibility into existing assets, weak governance of what has been deployed, and duplication of tools across teams.
Hybrid search capabilities help surface results related not only through specific keywords but also through natural language phrases.
"Discovery becomes the path of least resistance," AWS said. "Teams can search by name, description, and resource type to find existing content before building something new."
AWS is not the only vendor moving into AI management, as a growing number of providers are building similar capabilities to standardize AI agents and curb their sprawl.
In February, OpenAI launchedFrontier, an AI agent management platform for enterprises, allowing customers to build, deploy, and manage agentic AI. AWS will serve as the exclusive cloud distributor for the platform, which is model-agnostic. Meanwhile, Anthropic last week introducedClaude Managed Agents, offering pre-built infrastructure to simplify the development and oversight of autonomous systems.
Agent sprawl has previously been flagged as a key concern for CIOs this year, with companies struggling to keep pace with the rapid evolution of these tools. Autumn Stanish, director analyst at Gartner, noted in an opinion piece for CIO Dive that AI agents are quickly becoming one of the most disruptive forces in IT operations.
Indeed, AWS's announcement comes as CIOs shift their approach to AI, moving from experimentation to implementation. While early efforts focused on exploration, attention is now turning to how to organize, govern, and scale what has already been built.
