In-Depth Analysis

As IBM's business expands into software and services, consulting has become a strategic focus, especially in the AI field.

IBM CEO, President, and Chairman Arvind Krishna articulated this view to investors during the company'sQ1 2026 earnings callin April. "AI is both a growth engine and a productivity engine," he said. "As agents take on more work, delivery will become faster, more software-driven, and more scalable. IBM is actively embracing this shift through the Consulting Advantage platform."

The consulting business accounts for approximately one-third ofIBM's Q1 revenue(totaling nearly $16 billion). According to IBM CFO and Senior Vice President of Finance and Operations James Kavanaugh, the business contributed about 40% of the company's signings that quarter. He stated on the earnings call that consulting has become central to the company's "services-as-software" model, which refers to using AI to automate service-related tasks.

IBM tested its generative and agentic AI solutions internally with consultants for two years before fully opening theIBM Consulting Advantage platformto customers. The company is building AI agent teams for industry-specific applications in aerospace, financial services, government, healthcare, and telecommunications. According to Thursday's announcement, it is also building data pipelines to connect enterprise data with Gemini models.

Expanding its Google Cloud technical consulting workforce (including those working on-site at customer locations aspre-deployment engineers) also responds to another customer need—despite layoffs in other areas, large tech companies continue to absorb existing AI talent.

"We use the term 'pre-deployment units,'" Andy Baldwin, Senior Vice President of Product and Growth at IBM Consulting, told Channel Dive. "The teams we deploy include process domain experts, industry experts, and engineers who use the platform."
