IT unemployment rate drops below 3% for the first time this year

Despite overall economic demand for talent, the tech sector cut 15,503 jobs last month, bringing cumulative layoffs this year to nearly 140,000. According to Challenger, Gray & Christmas analysis, the tech sector accounts for nearly one-third of all announced layoffs this year.
"Technology remains the epicenter of layoffs this year. AI is the dominant force, with companies reorganizing around AI, automating roles, and reallocating budgets to new capabilities. The industry is reshaping itself in real time," said Andy Challenger, the company's chief revenue officer, in the analysis.
The software development market has been particularly impacted by the widespread adoption of automated development tools. A report by Randstad Digital found that AI-enhanced software development roles have grown by nearly 600% over the past five years, while traditional developer roles grew by only 28% during the same period.
